About Us
Ivy League Jiu Jitsu Academy is the premier martial arts school in Princeton-Homestead, Florida. We aim to provide high quality training in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to people of all ages.
More about what we teach: Judo & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are martial arts which focus primarily on using grappling techniques and redirection of momentum to defend against a stronger opponent. They share a common ancestor (Japanese Jiu-Jitsu) which was developed in feudal Japan for use on the battlefield but has modernized significantly over time to fit more modern applications.
Judo is a sport derived from Jiu-Jitsu it involves using holds and leverage to unbalance the opponent. After gaining worldwide popularity for its effectiveness, it became an Olympic sport and maintains a strong emphasis on standing techniques such as throws and sweeps.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on getting an opponent to the ground in order to neutralize possible strength or size advantages through ground fighting techniques and submission holds, involving joint-locks and choke holds. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was modified by the Gracie family and adapted to specialize in both offensive & defensive techniques on the ground. When used in tandem with Judo, these two martial arts disciplines form a very versatile system in the context of both sport and self-defense.
We incorporate techniques and concepts from both disciplines into each class in order to ensure well rounded skill development. Classes are divided by age group and experience level so that teaching can be carefully tailored to the needs of each student.
